It is important for you to ask questions of the attorney. Find out the types of cases they handle. Find out whether or not they have actually taken cases to trial, jury and non-jury. In the area of child abuse, find out if they have successfully tried these cases before. This is a very specialized area. The fact that the attorney many have handled murder, robbery, assault cases, etc. does not make the attorney qualified to successfully handle sexual abuse cases.
I have handled hundreds of cases involving false allegations of abuse. Of the cases that have gone to trial, a vast majority of my clients have been found not guilty.
Many attorneys seek my advice and expertise in these cases. Other lawyers have retained me as an expert to assist them in trial and in post-conviction relief situations. It is important and critical to your freedom to obtain a competent, knowledgeable attorney at the beginning of your case.
Sexual abuse cases are completely different types of cases. Find out if the attorney utilizes the services of an investigator. Not every case needs an investigator, but many do. Find out if the criminal defense attorney has used expert witnesses in these cases, i.e. psychologists and medical doctors. If the attorney has not utilized these experts in these types of cases, and especially if they do not understand their necessity, in my opinion, you would be foolish to hire that attorney. The attorney does not know the science, nor have the expertise to handle these cases.
Remember, a lawyer who guarantees results is a liar. A lawyer who guarantees that he will do everything in his power to make sure justice is done for you is who you are seeking. That is me. This could be the most important decision of your life. Choose wisely.
